Individuals who endured sexual abuse by church officials have expressed fresh optimism following their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, heading the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's choice to meet with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the issue.

Global Zero-Tolerance Approach Pushed

The organization is advocating for a global strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who confesses to or is found guilty of abusing a child. This policy has already been adopted in the US.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "resistance in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is pushback," they remarked.

Legacy Challenge

The current pontiff, who took the role in May, has taken on this longstanding problem that has haunted the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the Church and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Personal Connection

For the representative, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the measure is deeply meaningful. The North American advocate shared they were victimized by a clergy member who was later transferred between various churches.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we aim to collaborate with him," Hickey expressed. "Both sides share the same goal, we seek to end clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Multiple representatives of the organization, which includes survivors and supporters from more than 30 countries, met with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The discussion, initially planned for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was characterized as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a woman abused at a Catholic residential school for Indigenous children in North America.

Hickey added the Pope was "tender" about their own experience and seemed "modest, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Victims have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was genuine, practical, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The group is hoping that revisions to church regulations will enable the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have spoken with experts and compiled materials that they will present to the pontiff.

"He appeared interested in looking at it," Hickey remarked.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recently released church-ordered report emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or removal of Church leaders or staff in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The report also pointed out that victims repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for bishops and major superiors to be made responsible for negligence and cover-up."

Moving Forward

The representative shared they told the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the meeting, Hickey voiced hope for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and establishing a connection and continuing to build that relationship is a move in the right direction," Hickey stated.

Hickey added that they told with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can alter how the narrative concludes - he appreciated that."
