Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and image are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for increased openness.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Release
However, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet some are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding these files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
However, broader discourse on the right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy folders of materials that included no new information.
