PSG Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate occasions.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the showdown between the French league winners and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side struck twice late to take a surprise advantage. Initially, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking twist of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital leveler in the final seconds to send the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping decisive kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 4-1 penalty win.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
