A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant questions over construction quality.
